Mountain Ski Resorts
The great thing about mountains is that because some of them reach very high the weather is much colder toward the top, which of course results in snow and ice. And, where there is snow and ice, there is bound to be some form of skiing. Mountain ski resorts have proved very popular over the years as more of us are taking up the hobby, or for some the sport, of skiing.
Some mountain ski resorts are open all year round, whilst others are only able to open during certain times of the year. It is all down to the weather of course. Too little snow, or too strong winds can easily put an end to a day’s activities. In some cases though, artificial snow can be shipped in so as to allow activities to continue.
Mountain ski resorts are not there just for those wishing to ski, however. Other sports using the snow include snowboarding, snowmobiling, dog-sledding, ice skating and sledging. There are often ski schools available for those who are beginners to learn new skills. And for those who are more experienced some operators organise other ski-related activities such as cross country – sometimes offering more than one cross country skiing area with varied and picturesque circuits – and telemark, ski touring and ski mountaineering. In fact skiing has come on so much that in some places schools for disabled people have been set up to help those with special needs to ski.
Anyone thinking of going to mountain ski resorts should consider a number of things before booking. What level of experience do you have, if any? Many mountain ski resorts offer lessons, how much do they cost? If you are a beginner you may need to factor those into your holiday budget. As far as accommodation is concerned, will you want lodging on the slopes themselves, or in a nearby area like a town? Do you have your own skis, or will you need to hire some when you are at your mountain ski resort? Apart from the obvious like food, you will also need to budget for ski lift passes and so on.
Depending on which mountain ski resort is chosen, the amenities at some are of a very high standard, are varied and plentiful, and can contribute towards having a truly wonderful holiday.
