As long as there have been mountains man has been fascinated by them, whether for the purpose of exploration, climbing, skiing, or just feeling literally “on top of the world.” And whilst the main thing many of us might think about with mountains is climbing up them, the activities we can engage in are as varied as the mountains themselves. The only limit is that which we place upon ourselves. And it’s this that makes a mountain holiday so perfect.

Certainly not everyone’s idea of a good holiday is going off to hot, sunny destinations, spending time lazing about on the beach. A mountain holiday offers a number of things that cannot be enjoyed elsewhere. And nowadays it is so easy to travel from one country to another, even hopping from one continent to another, that the pleasures of a mountain holiday can easily be found. And, although it is probably true to say that skiing is one of the main leisure pursuits looked for in a mountain holiday, there is much more to enjoy besides travelling down the side of a mountain on skis.

Take, for instance, the example of Chamonix, situated in the Alps, in France. It is 15 km away from both the Swiss and Italian borders. The population of Chamonix is about 10,000. In winter, it can expect up to 60,000 visitors a day. Yet, in the summer, there are up to 100,000 daily visitors. Clearly the snow and skiing isn’t the only activity that draws people to that Alpine town. Perhaps it is the sights and scents of alpine flowers, beautiful green meadows with alpine flora and fauna, and the clear air that are the appeal for so many.

Go on a mountain holiday and you could end up just relaxing by a little walking, or, doing some cycling, rafting, canoeing, canyoning, even golfing. Golfing? Yes, in some mountain holiday resorts you will find excellent golf courses with incredible scenery, and as the air is thinner up in the mountains the ball will fly even further than normal.

Whether you are looking for peace and tranquility, or the glitz offered in some places, you are sure to find what you want on a mountain holiday.
